Care & Replacement Parts
Wooden boards and pieces
Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth. Water sitting on a joint is what lifts a veneer, so wring the cloth out properly and dry the surface after. No solvent, no furniture polish, no oil unless the piece is raw wood — a lacquered board does not absorb it and ends up sticky.
Keep the board out of direct sun. Prolonged sun bleaches the pale squares faster than the dark ones, and the contrast is what you are paying for.
Metal pieces
Wipe with a dry cloth. Fingerprints on polished brass show quickly and come off with a clean microfibre. An antiqued finish is meant to sit in the recesses — do not scrub it out. Never use metal polish on a plated piece; it takes the plating with it.
Felt and stitched points
Lift dust with a soft brush, in the direction of the nap. On a backgammon board the points are stitched in, so a light brush is safe along the seams.
Drawers and hinges
If a drawer starts to bind, it is usually humidity rather than damage. Leave it open a day in a dry room. Do not force it, and do not wax the runners.
Timers
Take the batteries out if the clock will sit unused for months. A leaking cell ruins the contacts, and that is the one failure we cannot repair.
